Miles of Pillowcase Smiles
ConKerr Cancer - A Case for Smiles Miles of Pillowcase Smiles Event

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. To honor this event, our chapter of  ConKerr Cancer, A Case For Smiles will join together with chapters nationwide to produce more pillowcases than ever before! From September 13-19 we will participate in the First Annual Miles of Pillowcase Smiles.  ConKerr Cancer volunteers around the country will share their time, talent and material to make cheerful handmade pillowcases for their local children’s hospitals and create “miles of pillowcase smiles.”  All the pillowcases turned in during September will count.  To be a part of this exciting event, just give me a call, 904-753-1395, or send me an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 1,089 TO BE EXACT

That's how many pillowcases we have delivered to Wolfson Children's Hospital and Nemours Clinic as of the end of February 2010.

The deliveries started in February of 2009, but we in Nassau County didn't get involved in this project until late summer.  We started participating in deliveries in October.

UGA - UF Pillowcase Raffle

The GFWC Woman's Club held a most successful fundraiser just prior to the University of Georgia - University of Florida Football game.  We raffled one UGA and one UF pillowcase.

Thanks to Magna's and Publix allowing us to use their locations, we raised more than $500 to purchase fabric for pillowcases.

We loaded the displays that Wiggle Worms donated with Georgia and Florida pillowcases, and GFWC Woman's Club members manned a table at Magna's:

GREAT NEWS!

Wiggle Worms donated this display for our pillowcases.

We've been using it for fundraisers and also at GFWC Woman's Club of Fernandina Beach meetings to show off our handiwork.

It is just perfect!

AMELIA ISLAND QUILT GUILD AND THE GFWC WOMAN'S CLUB OF FERNANDINA BEACH, INC.

The Amelia Island Quilt Guild scheduled two workshops to make pillowcases, and the GFWC Woman's Club of Fernandina Beach, Inc., joined in providing their clubhouse and a number of their members to help.  The first session was on Saturday, September 12th, 2009, and the second on Tuesday, September 15.

These absolutely wonderful ladies completed 156 cases!!!!!!!

Special thanks go out to Cynthia Janney, president of the Quilters and Julie Robertson, president of the Woman's Club who helped organize this project.

People arrived at various times and stayed for different lengths of time so,unfortunately, it was impossible to get pictures of all who came.  But below you can see some hard at work, and the fantastically adorable pillowcases that resulted from these two workshops.

HUGE Donation from the WAL-MART FOUNDATION!!

WAL-MART FOUNDATION DONATION

Mr. John Johnson, Manager of the Yulee Wal-Mart store,

secured for us a $1,000 donation!!

So a fabric-buying spree was in order and just in time for the Amelia Island Quilt Guild's workshop.

It's about putting smiles on the faces of children who are sick with cancer or another serious illness.

How?  With a pillowcase!  That's right, just a simple pillowcase, but these pillowcases are bright, colorful, and fun.  It's amazing how something so small can have such a positive impact on children in hospitals.

They just love replacing that boring white pillowcase with a fun one, of their choosing, to reflect their personality or interests.

The national website is http://www.conkerrcancer.org/; and locally we have a group dedicated to helping this wonderful program.  We've already started providing them to Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, and we could use some help.

Maybe you'd like to volunteer - for more information just call or text (904-753-1395) or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
